Marketplace comparison guide

How to compare online business marketplaces.

Choose a marketplace by the deals, access, costs, evidence, and closing support that fit your transaction. This framework helps buyers and sellers compare the operating model behind the headline price.

Six comparison checks

Compare what happens before, during, and after an inquiry.

Marketplace fees are only one part of the decision. The right platform should match the size and type of business, make material facts understandable, and leave no ambiguity about who handles diligence and closing.

01

Inventory fit

Check the typical business type, maturity, asking-price range, and minimum financial requirements. A broad catalog is not automatically the best fit for a smaller acquisition.

02

Buyer access

Confirm what buyers can see for free, what requires a paid membership, when direct seller contact becomes available, and whether early access changes visibility.

03

Seller economics

Compare listing fees, renewals, success fees, transaction fees, optional promotion, exclusivity, and any required advisory service.

04

Evidence and review

Separate identity or ownership review from financial verification. Look for consistent disclosure fields, dated evidence, clear seller-reported labels, and room for independent diligence.

05

Deal tools

Identify whether messaging, nondisclosure agreements, letters of intent, contracts, escrow, payment, and transfer tools are included, optional, or handled outside the marketplace.

06

Closing responsibility

Know who is responsible for legal advice, tax review, payment, escrow, data handling, credential transfer, and post-closing support before making an offer.

Important boundary

A marketplace can organize information without replacing diligence.

SBM reviews eligibility and listing completeness, but financial information remains seller-reported unless a listing states otherwise. Buyers are responsible for independent financial, legal, technical, tax, security, and commercial review. Use qualified professional support when the risk warrants it.
